Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese medical practice that has been used on people and animals for thousands of years. It is preformed by insertion of sterile needles, electro-stimulation, pressure, or injection into specific points on the body.
This results in a release of endorphins, other chemical messengers, and nerve signals that have wide-spread effects on the body resulting in healing, pain relief, and relaxation.
Conditions commonly treated with acupuncture:
Acute or chronic pain
Hip or elbow dysplasia
Intervertebral disk disease
Facial nerve paralysis
Chronic renal insufficiency/failure
Upper respiratory infections
Irritable bowel disease
Urinary and fecal incontinence
Cancer – used an adjunct treatment to improve quality of life
What to expect:
Acupuncture at Brookswood Animal Clinic is provided by scheduling an Integrative Appointment. At the initial visit the veterinarian will discuss your primary concerns and goals for your pet. Both a conventional (Western) and traditional Chinese medical exam will be performed. An individualize diagnostic and treatment plan will then be advised based on your pet’s diagnosis.
The initial integrative appointment is approximately 1 hour. Follow-up integrative appointments will last approximately 30-45 minutes. Acupuncture treatments are included in the integrative appointment cost.
For acute conditions it is common to expect weekly integrative appointments and acupuncture until the problem has been addressed.
For chronic conditions once a week integrative appointment and acupuncture are advised for 4 consecutive weeks. The frequency of visits will then be re-evaluated and is variable depending on the individual patient.
